PHILADELPHIA, PA — If you didn’t get a slice
of the city’s federal stimulus funds to provide work
force training this summer, you now have a second
crack at it.
The Philadelphia Workforce Investment Board is seeking
request for proposals for skills training in emerging
occupations in the “green” economy outside of weatherization
Mayor Michael Nutter and PWIB will make the announcement
this Monday at Maxwell Education Group, which was
awarded $150,000 in the first round for a solar panel
installation training program. The initial class of
25 will wrap up the classroom portion of the program
Monday and although the program is still under way,
many students have already lined up jobs, the Mayor’s
Office reported.
Green jobs training is also a focus outside of the
city, where on Monday funding for a new Green Jobs
Academy in Bucks County will be announced. U.S. Rep.
Patrick Murphy, DBucks, has secured nearly $800,000
for the Academy, which is the result of a public-private
partnership. Bucks County Community College, Bucks
County Technical High School, Drexel University and
Delaware Valley College are the major academic partners
for the Academy, which will provide training for students
to fill new green jobs coming to Bucks County. The
center will be located at the Bridge Business Center
in Bristol Township, which was able to use federal
stimulus funds to go greener itself.
